How To Keep Your Children Happy In A Recession

Posted by DavePF - November 25th, 2008

Here’s the facts: we are in a recession and many holiday consumers are expected to hold tight onto their wallets this season. An exception to this trend is the market for kids’ toys and baby toys. The reason for this is that parents will always make sacrifices in their lifestyle but seldom do the same for their children’s lifestyle. Still, there are a number of things parents can do to keep their children happy without busting the budget.

One surefire piece of advice is to stick with children’s toys that hold attention spans In other words, seek out toys that have a wide age range (escalating skill levels) and also ones that promote kids’ natural ability to use their imaginations. You can bet that best selling holiday toys that stay popular for over a year are successful at one of these areas. The corollary to this is that trendy toys based on movies or cartoons rarely hold kids interest for long, unless they incorporate learning or puzzles.
Other popular toys are worth purchasing because they encourage group play, which means the price per child is less than toys designed for solitary play. Outdoor toys are great for this, especially because they can encourage kids to play with their neighbors. This strategy can encourage good neighborhood relationships to form, which of course is the least expensive kind of play that we know of!
