Today’s holiday celebrations are connected to ancient ways by the season and by the beauty and symbology of the evergreen tree. Celts, Romans, early Christians, and civilizations around the world lived close to nature and the outdoors. They worshipped within groves of ancient trees. Early pagans would honor the largest tree by placing presents beneath it, and many cultures tied Christmas lights to tree branches as symbols of prayers or thanks.
Trees and other plants that stayed green the year round were considered to have power. The evergreen tree symbolized power over darkness and death, and represented the never-ending cycle of the natural world. Life continues its cycle even in the coldest and darkest of days of the year.
Wreaths are an ancient symbol of victory. In the case of the holiday wreath, this can be imagined as victory over darkness, winter, or death. The circular shape represents eternal rebirth, while evergreens symbolize eternal life. Laurel has been used since the Roman Empire as a symbol for victory; cedar suggests strength and healing; and holly, pine and yew represent immortality.
Even cultures that celebrated outdoors began bringing evergreens indoors as reminders that the sun would return. Some of the other natural items used to Christmas lights wreaths also had ancient significance. For example, Holly is also an evergreen tree, which in Celtic times was recognized as growing hidden among the oaks for much of the year, but asserting itself over its brother the Oak. As winter approached the Oak lost its leaves and, symbolically, its power.
The Romans celebrated Saturnalia, and the holly tree was considered sacred to Saturn. In spite of protests from the Christian church, many Christians adopted both holly and other evergreens into their Christmas celebrations. Holly’s prickly leaves have come to symbolize Jesus’ crown of thorns, and the red berries represent drops of his bloodshed to save mankind.
On the other hand, Druids believed that holly warded off witches and lightning, and many brought holly into their homes during the winter months to provide shelter for fairies during the storms.
As we weave our Christmas ornaments and wreaths, we can remember these ancient stories of faith and hope, and weave some of these images into our decorations as well. But the holiday season is a time of generosity and festivity whether you believe these ancient stories or not. No knowledge or belief is necessary to appreciate a wreath’s beauty and welcoming spirit.

It seems to be hard to buy for men. At least it is for me. There are only so many times I can buy golf clubs or fishing gear before I am looking for new ideas to get for the men in my life. This has led me to think a lot about things like gift baskets for him. Though women often get these from friends and family alike, it is not often many think to get them for the men they love. Just like the female version of these, they can be tailored to whatever it is that the man in your life might like to have.
You can fill gift baskets for him with food items if you wish, and that is always something that is appreciated. This is especially good for the single guy that does not like to shop or cook. I know this is something that we often get for my dad. He lives on his own and is not a great cook. When we find something he likes that we can include in a gift basket, it saves him from cooking a few meals, and he is always happy to get this.
You can also make up Christmas gift baskets that have the ingredients for a meal that he loves, but does not know how to cook. By including the ingredients and simple directions, he can have the meal that he wants with a little help from us. You don’t have to make these either, as you can find them online.
Though the most common types of gift basket supplies might be candies and lotions, you should know that this is just the tip of the iceberg. If you were to browse through what they have, you may come up with many great ideas for people who are hard to shop and buy for. These can even be great ideas for bosses and coworkers when you need something to give, but you have no idea what they may like.
You could also get him new golf grips to include in the gift baskets for him, but that is a risky buy if you don’t know that they need new ones or which ones to buy.
These gift basket supplies will give a local feel to your basket, and you can find items you can’t find anywhere else. The items will be made with care, and will have a most personal touch to them. You might even find things that are unique to your area that you can’t find anywhere else.
You can also find gift basket supplies in other places. You can find items in any department store, or you can shop in all of the specialty stores in your area. What you buy will be up to you, because you are the only one who knows what items you really want to put into a basket. You can get gift basket supplies by shopping online as well, and don’t forget to include things like gift certificates if you are running low on ideas, or feel that something seems to be missing.

The Twelve Days of Christmas is actually one of the most incorrectly identified holiday traditions and time periods on the calendar today. Most people assume that the 12 days of Christmas, like the advent calendar comes before and leads up to Christmas day. However, it actually begins on or after Christmas.
The 12 days of Christmas is also known as the period of Christmastide. During Christmastide, the way people celebrate the holiday season varies slightly. For instance, there are different beliefs as to when the holiday should be celebrated. These beliefs are typically influenced by the culture that you live in as well as the religious denomination that you practice.
For example, some traditions celebrate the twelve days of Christmas from Christmas day until January 5th. Other traditions celebrate it starting on Christmas evening until January 6th.
The twelve days of Christmas signifies the travel of the 3 Kings from the east to go see Jesus. When the Kings discovered that Jesus was born, they decided to travel to Bethlehem to see him. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh with them.
There are various philosophies of when the appropriate time to give gifts is during this time period. Many people identify Christmas day as the appropriate time to give gifts. Others save their gifts until the 12th day of Christmas. There are also many cultures and denominations that believe that a gift should be given each day of the 12 days.
This holiday period has a number of different ways that you can celebrate it. Many people celebrate it by lighting candles for the 12 days. For example, on each day of the 12 days, they light a candle to represent the progression of the Christmastide season.
Christmas dinner is also a significant part of the 12 days. The way dinner is treated varies as well. Some groups of people have their major Christmas dinner on Christmas day itself. Others have their major dinner on the 12th day of Christmas. Still others have a feast every day of the 12 days.
Then of course you have the 12 days of Christmas song. This song is the one where the lyrics are “On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me” There are many people who believe that this song actually refers to different components of the Christian faith, such as the Trinity and the 4 Gospels of Christ. Other people believe that this is false and is simply an urban legend.
Regardless of what you believe on how the twelve days of Christmas should be celebrated, it can be an incredible opportunity for you to gather with your friends and family and have fun. You can choose the best way to celebrate it based on your own beliefs and convictions about the holiday season.

I grew up in a family where gift giving was practiced on a regular basis. We did not have a great deal of money. My parents worked hard for everything that they had and everything that they gave to us. I think this is why anything extra that was given felt like a gift. My mother has always been very giving.
As an adult I have tried to carry on my mother’s giving spirit. I buy items when I see them on sale and store them in a closet at home. When it comes time for a gift giving occasion I have a supply of things to give. My favorite thing to do is to develop unique Gift Baskets for the people I am giving to. This is where the small things I pick up through the year come into play. I do not like the pre-packaged baskets because you cannot tell the quality of the items that are wrapped together; also they tend to be more filler than items.
To start my unique gift baskets I find a container that suits the person I am giving the gift too. I have used a variety of things. Sometimes the container is the main gift and other times it simply holds the other items together. The unique gift baskets that I gave my sisters for Christmas were by far my favorite. My two sisters are both master gardeners. They have beautiful backyard gardens. I started my gifts by purchasing sturdy watering cans that would be the basket for the gift. Inside I placed a pair of shears for cutting flowers, a hand pruner, a hand held spade and rake for potting plants and a mister to apply pesticides. On the handle of the water can I tied a pair of garden gloves that were folded tog ether and fanned out to look like a bow. My sisters loved their unique gift baskets. Having the gardening tools given in the winter time gave them extra hope that spring was on its way.
I have also given the baskets that are filled with personal care products. Instead of buying the pre-made ones I make up my own to stay in the theme of unique gift baskets. This way I can include a person’s favorite scent, or favorite candy or other treat. Two years ago for Christmas we gave three families that we exchange gifts with a family gift basket. These unique gift baskets included a deck of cards, a card game, dice and rules for a dice game, a box of microwave popcorn, several boxes of movie theater candies, and certificates for movie rentals at the neighborhood video store and a certificate for a take and bake pizza. The container was a flat basket that had a lid so the cards and dice could be stored in it. This provided for an evening at home for the families. It is fun to use your imagination and to put together gifts that people will enjoy because they were made specifically for them.

Shopping your man could be a bit daunting. You want to give him something extra special, that’s a given. You want to give him something he could remember you by, that’s sweet. But also, you want to give him something sensible, something he’d actually have a need for. What could you possibly give him that’s usefully special that works as a gentle reminder of your presence in his life?
Sit still and make a list. You know him best so you’re in a unique position to answer your own question. Think about him and what he likes. Do you know what he prefers? Don’t go for the obvious. You’re a sorry girlfriend if you never notice peculiar habits. Jot those down and see what you have.
If he smokes either as a habit or as an interest, he’d more likely be fond of lighters. A cheap zippo lighter would be a great treat. Price isn’t always the deciding factor. Style and design count. Pick one that looks interesting. He’d be delighted.
If he is fond of slogan shirts, get him a really good one-the wackier the slogan, the better. Go for those with political satire or business jokes theme. A clever joke would be fun. Avoid the cheesy dating and romance-themed shirts. Remember who you’re buying the shirt for. Enough said.
mantel clocks would be an excellent gift for a time-conscious guy. Busy lawyers, doctors, bankers, even software engineers and top sales people live by the clock. A barrage of meetings and client visits makes timekeeping indispensable to these men. If you’re man is any one of these, he’d most likely own a variety of clocks and watches. Mantel clocks could be your classy contribution to his little collection.
But if you’d prefer to err on the side of practicality, custom business card holders are among your best options. You can have it personalized so it’s uniquely him from you. Besides, he’s certain to be carrying it with him whenever he’s out. Every business person carries a wad of business cards around. Getting him custom business card holders guarantees you‘re always with him. It might not be too subtle but a gentle reminder nonetheless. And it’s definitely not something he would resent you for.
Finding the perfect gift for him does not have to be a quest. Gifts don’t have to be expensive either. Meaningful gifts are those signed, sealed and delivered with tender thoughts and a promise of forever.

Finally, after months of living with piles of paperwork and working in the kitchen because it’s the only place in your house that does not overflow with clutter, you decide to reclaim your space by cleaning house. You chuck out all the things you no longer need before turning to your husband’s big collection of atomic clocks and nautical table clocks.
You know he will probably want to kill you after you tell him what you did to his beloved timepieces. Nevertheless, you put all the clocks inside a box and mark it “For Yard Sale”. Just as you’re about to do the same to his hoard of desk clocks, a few cute ones catch your attention. You pick them up and – surprise! – find out that they’re stillfunctional. You decide to keep four desk clocks so you can put one in each bedroom. You finish the clean-up by taping all of the boxes for the big sale. Just as you’re about to start making dinner, however, you spy rolls and rolls of duct tape on a corner. If you are thinking of throwing or selling these away, stop! Duct tape is very versatile. Other than being a good adhesive, it has many other uses. Here are some of them.
1. Butt crack cover
If your butt crack is always all over the place because your jeans slide down each time you sit, make sure no one ever sees your butt crack again by taping it with duct tape.
2. Cargo strap
Your trunk is full but you still have three boxes to bring with you. What’s a space-challenged driver to do? Put all three boxes on top of your car and strap them down with duct tape. With any luck, the tape will hold til you get to your destination.
3. Instant auto repair
In these difficult times, no one’s more cash-strapped than you are. If you don’t have the cash to get your car fixed, simply duct tape the damage. If your window behaves, the adhesive can keep it firmly stuck in place until the recession is over.
4. Girl catcher
It takes a long time and countless of tries to find a good woman so when your son does, hold on to her – literally. With all those rolls of duct tape, you shouldn’t have any problems holding her down to the wall or the couch.
5. Bra
Some dresses are designed in such a way you’ll have to go bra-less when you wear them. This is well and good if you’re still young and the twins are perky. If you’re not and they’re not, duct tape can be your best friend. With adhesive to give the twins a boost, you can slither into any revealing dress anytime!
Oh, and if you’re a frazzled parent, you can silence a child or keep him or her in one place with – what else? – adhesive.
